blog moved
Hi,

I don't know if anybody ever followed this blog, but just in case:

The idea of having separate portuguese and english blogs didn't work well, as I should have known from the beginning. I am now maintaining one blog only, with entries classified per language which is much easier and natural for me.

My new blog url is:

http://blog.bauermann.eng.br/

And to get only the posts in english, you can use:

http://blog.bauermann.eng.br/category/english/

And you can get an english-only RSS feed with this:

http://blog.bauermann.eng.br/category/english/feed/

free music

In the last few months, I've been into searching and listening to free music (I don't think it's fair to pirate music and I don't want to depend just on CDs and radio to hear new songs). Anyway, I've found some real good stuff and I'd like to share them and promote these bands.

The biggest problem I have is to find non-electronic music (rock and blues are what I'm after, mostly), which is the genre of the majority of the offerings out there. But I was surprised to find some real gems.

I'm very bad at classifying or describing music, so I will just give a flat list and then comment on some of the entries:

Some of the above are free as in beer, some are free as in speech.

Of these, HYPE is currently among my favorite rock bands (both free and non-free). And I really like the sound of Acoustic Affinités and Trafic de Blues. Despite sounding too electronic to my ears, I enjoy Looper (especially the "The Strangest Girl" song). DoF (I only have the "A Year in Waiting" album) is great to listen to while hacking/programming.

keeping track of timezones
Working in the LTC means working with people spread around the globe. Or at least at a few different timezones...

I just found out about this feature in KDE which I suspect will become very handy for me from now on: have the taskbar's clock show the time in different timezones:

To enable it, just right-click on the clock, select "Configure Clock..." and then the "Timezones" tab.

GNOME, of course, has the same feature. That's how I had the idea to search for this in the first place...

scenes from the open source world

It's well known that code review and discussions during development of new functionality are strong points of the open source development methodology. Here's a fine example of this practice:

And here's a practical example on how to present your arguments on a mailing list discussion:

Jamendo: Open your ears
Searching for some free, legal music to download, I came across Jamendo, and I really liked it.

From the website itself:

"Jamendo is a new model for artists to promote, publish, and be paid for their music.

On jamendo, the artists distribute their music under Creative Commons licenses. In a nutshell, they allow you to download, remix and share their music freely. It's a "Some rights reserved" agreement, perfectly suited for the new century."

Unfortunately, most of the music available is electronic, which is not my kind of music. But I found some real good blues and rock bands there. Most are French. I'll comment about them in the near future.

kickoff
Ok, this is the en_US version of my blog. I have already a pt_BR version at http://bauermann.multiply.com/. I'm not sure yet what will go into the English version and what will go into the Portuguese version, but I'd like to try and keep both going at some pace...
